چکیده

Evidence from reports in the technical literature, laboratory research, and operational experience with the MIOX mixed-oxidant solution (MOS) in swimming pool water strongly indicates that MOS causes steady oxidation of organic nitrogen compounds and organic chloramines, and rapid completion of the breakpoint reaction on inorganic –N– fragments from that oxidation rather than allowing accumulation of them (including volatile NHCl2 and NCl3) in the pool water, as is likely the case using chlorine (to wit, the common swimmer's complaints of "chlorinous" odors and burning eyes when bleach/hypochlorite is used for disinfection). This steady removal of organic nitrogen and rapid completion of the breakpoint reaction would be expected to cause the following beneficial effects, as have been noted by swimmers in and operators of virtually all pools using MOS as a replacement for chlorine for disinfection 1 :

Inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and Clostridium perfringens spores by a mixed-oxidant disinfectant and by free chlorine.

Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and Clostridium perfringens spores are very resistant to chlorine and other drinking-water disinfectants. Clostridium perfringens spores have been suggested as a surrogate indicator of disinfectant activity against Cryptosporidium parvum and other hardy pathogens in water. In this study, an alternative disinfectant system consisting of an electrochemically produce...

Benefits of carbon dioxide as pH reducer in chlorinated indoor swimming pools.

Carbon dioxide is seldom used as pH reducer in swimming pools. Nevertheless it offers two interesting advantages. First, its use instead of the usual hydrochloric acid avoids the characteristic and serious accident of mixing the disinfectant with that strong acid, which forms a dangerous chlorine gas cloud and, second, it allows the facility to become slightly a depository of that greenhouse ga...
